The visit highlighted the enduring charm and cultural richness of this UNESCO World Heritage site.
The tour began at the iconic Nassif House, a stunning example of the district’s architectural heritage. Built with coral stone for natural cooling, the house stands as a testament to the ingenuity of Al-Balad’s early builders. Mr. Oliverio expressed admiration for the centuries-old Quranic inscriptions preserved within, marveling at their intricate craftsmanship and historical significance.
A walk through Souq Al-Alawi and Souq Al-Nada provided an immersive experience into Jeddah’s vibrant markets. These bustling souqs showcased the area’s cultural wealth, offering a colorful array of spices, traditional textiles, and handcrafted goods. The delegation also met local artisans, including skilled calligraphers and woodworkers, who play a crucial role in preserving the district’s artistic legacy.
The visit concluded with a tour of the historic Al-Shafi Mosque, a landmark that underscores Al-Balad’s spiritual and architectural history.
