Environmental Issues & Promote Sustainability

KSA HAS PURSUING VARIOUS INITIATIVES TO ADDRESS ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES & PROMOTE SUSTAINABILITY
Here are some key actions and projects:
KSA Green Initiative
Launched in 2021, the KSA Green Initiative aims to combat climate change and improve the quality of life by increasing vegetation cover, reducing carbon emissions & protecting marine and terrestrial environments. The initiative includes planting 10 billion trees across the country and rehabilitating 40 million hectares of degraded land over the coming decades.
Middle East Green Initiative
This regional initiative, also launched in 2021, aims to plant 50 billion trees across the Middle East and restore an area equivalent to 200 million hectares of degraded land. It focuses on cross-border cooperation to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable development.
Vision 2030
Saudi Arabia places a high priority on public welfare, investing heavily in healthcare, education, and social services. The government provides comprehensive healthcare services that are accessible to all, ensuring that everyone receives the care they need. Educational institutions are designed to foster a safe and nurturing learning environment, contributing to the overall safety of the community.
Cultural and Social Harmony
KSA’s Vision 2030, the country’s ambitious reform plan, includes several environmental goals. These involve reducing dependence on oil, diversifying the economy, and developing renewable energy sources. The plan emphasizes sustainable development and environmental protection as key components.
National Renewable Energy Program
The program aims to diversify KSA’s energy mix by increasing the share of renewable energy sources. The goal is to generate 50% of the country’s energy from renewables by 2030, with significant investments in solar and wind energy projects.
Environmental Regulations & Compliance
The transfer of functions from the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME) to the four new environmental centers in 2019 marked a restructuring to enhance environmental governance. These centers focus on compliance, vegetation cover, wildlife protection, and meteorology, ensuring adherence to environmental standards.
National Center for Wildlife
This center focuses on the conservation and protection of wildlife and their habitats. It undertakes various projects to preserve biodiversity, combat desertification & protect endangered species.
Waste Management Initiatives
KSA is implementing modern waste management practices, including recycling and waste-to-energy projects. The aim is to reduce landfill waste and promote the circular economy.
Water Conservation
Given its arid climate, KSA is investing in technologies and policies to enhance water conservation, including desalination projects, wastewater treatment, and efficient water usage in agriculture and industry.
Marine Protection
Efforts are being made to protect marine environments, particularly in the Red Sea & Arabian Gulf. This includes measures to combat oil pollution, protect coral reefs, and maintain marine biodiversity.
These initiatives and policies reflect KSA’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development as part of its broader national transformation agenda.
